The Bank of Mum and Dad needs boundaries.
There is something deeply satisfying about helping your children while you are still around to see the difference it makes.
A contribution towards a first home. Payments towards a home upgrade or financial help to move to a nicer neighbourhood. Covering school fees for grandchildren. Lending a hand when life throws an unexpected curveball. Unlike an inheritance, you get to watch it unfold – you see some of the financial pressure lifted from the people you care about most.
For many parents, that feels far more rewarding than leaving money behind after they are gone.
