McQueen’s insights helpful for those with ageing parents

Hannah McQueen’s article (July 29) on caring for our ageing parents resonated deeply with me. I, too, have reached the stage of life where my parents are growing older. My mother is approaching 80 and, thankfully, remains healthy and independent. Yet I already find myself thinking about the future because she cannot imagine living apart from us.

There is no immediate need to make decisions, but I know that conversations about ageing care are no longer a distant prospect – they are simply a matter of time. McQueen aptly describes caregiving as an “invisible job”. It begins long before hands-on care is needed, with the emotional responsibility of planning ahead while respecting a parent’s wishes and independence.
