Brightly Health Coaching case study

When Gordon, 74, started health coaching with Brightly, his world had quietly been getting smaller. He felt his hearing aids “weren’t working properly”, so he’d pulled back from social situations. Walking was his only exercise, and his wife cooked all his meals.
None of these things were a crisis on their own. Together, they were the kind of slow changes that can chip away at independence and quality of life without anyone really noticing.
What we worked on
Over three sessions with Brightly Health Coach Shelley Smith, Gordon set his own goals and took small, practical steps towards each one.
-
Hearing. Rather than putting up with his hearing aids, he went back to his audiologist to have them checked. The problem turned out to be wax build-up, not the hearing aids. Once that was cleared, he could hear well again.
-
Connection. With his hearing sorted, he started calling friends to meet for coffee. He now catches up regularly with a group of men.
-
Strength. He began using the home gym he already had, gradually challenging himself to lift heavier. He can now lift a 40kg bag of dog food onto his shoulder and do bicep curls with a 25kg bar. Impressive at any age!
-
Nutrition. He switched to a higher-protein diet and has noticed much more energy.
-
Independence in the kitchen. At 74, he’s learning to cook, which can feel like learning a new language. Getting everything ready at the same time can still fluster him, but he keeps choosing new recipes and pushing himself. His goal is to cook dinner while his wife is at work, so he can do it in a calm kitchen and she has a nice meal to come home to.
The results
In just three sessions, Gordon went from being slightly withdrawn to socially connected, physically stronger and more independent at home.
Why it worked
Health coaching isn’t about being told what to do. It’s about finding what matters to you and building habits that stick. Some of Gordons’s biggest wins came from small steps, like getting his ears checked or using equipment he already had. Each success built confidence for the next one.
