Last week, I wrote about a friend in her 50s who has started to believe she’s less hireable because of her age. This week, a small business owner gave me the other side of the story.
He runs a trade business with eight staff. His most experienced guy is 63, brilliant with clients and the one called when a job goes sideways.
“I’d love to keep him on for another 10 years,” he told me. “I just don’t know if the business can carry him.”
Most New Zealand businesses are small and battling rising costs and squeezed margins. I’m not suggesting employers carry people they can’t afford.
I’m asking something cheaper.
